Stencil Forest: Music

Pandemonium Shadow Show

(Stencil Forest)
Words & Music by Frank Cassella

The Pandemonium Shadow Show
Crept into town (through the back door)
As calliope music played on the wind
And whispered to children they started to sing

In all the excitement, through all the commotion
That passed through that midwestern town in a rage
Nobody noticed the untimely arrival
So far out of season for a traveling stage

Of Dark and Cooger’s Spectacular Show
So very little did they know
Of deep rooted secrets that follow within
Of Dark and Cooger’s Spectacular Show
So very little did they know
Of deep rooted secrets that follow within
As calliope music played on the wind

With each turn of the carousel
We age another year
For every ride on this living hell
There’s another man to fear
Ooh I should have stayed home at night
Or lived in some other place
Too many things just don’t look right
From the grin upon his face

Ooo teacher you’re much younger now
Since you came from the house of mirrors
What’s it like when it’s plain to see
All your inner fears
And your nephew looks so familiar
Even though I’m sure we never met
But he used to be much younger
It’s a face I can’t forget

Ooo father please take my hand
There is comfort in your eyes
In my youthful independent ways
I never realized
That for every unknown thing we fear
There is refuge in a smile
And the darkness always disappears
When you wait it out awhile

In a small midwestern town one night
There is peace forevermore
Another battle fought and won
In the oldest living war
And a group of carneys pack their bags
While the Devil starts to roast
The calliope is silent
While the winner drinks a toast
